Manila's Street Children
There are thought to be about 60,000 to
75,000 street children in Manila. These children are the
victims of proverty, abuse, breakdown of the family, and
exploitation. They survive through begging and scavenging
for food, menial jobs, petty theft and prostitution.
Our Ministry in Manila
The Ang Bahay Parola (meaning “The Lighthouse”
in the Filipino language of Tagalog) street child ministry
was inspired and begun by a former MTW missionary Renae
Johnson. Renae began ministering to Manila street
children in the late 1990’s. Working with MTW,
Philippines churches, the first children’s
home—for girls— was opened in January 2001.
It is now known as “Renae’s Home.”
A second home for boys was opened in June 2001, and a third,
known as “Grace Home,” was dedicated in October
2003. To read Renae’s personal account
